Diagnosis

Sciatica is a pain that results from irritation of one of sciatic nerves. This is a lower back pain that goes down to hip and then to both legs extending to feet and toes in some cases. Sciatica nerve is the largest nerve in our body. Running down the spine through the hip, sciatic nerve goes down to knee and ankle. Any damage or pressure on this nerve results in debilitating sciatica pain that needs thorough investigation of probable causes on the basis of symptoms to provide relief to the patient on a permanent basis.

Unlike other diseases or ailments where doctors diagnose the cause on the basis of symptoms and provide relief through drugs or therapy, sciatica presents a problem in this regard. It is easy to see sciatica patients relying on their own treatment method, a home remedy or exercises prescribed by a doctor as the cure of this debilitating medical condition. Just as there are scores of causes of this ailment, so are the number of treatment methods or cures though it would be wrong to call them cure. Patients cling to any treatment method that seemingly brings some relief to them but it is seen that these measures are temporary in nature and the severe pain of sciatica returns, and probably more in intensity than before. It is important to note that the effectiveness of any remedy depends upon how it relates to the underlying cause of pain which is different in the case of every individual.

It is prudent to differentiate between cures and relief as many treatment methods are no more than measures bringing relief from the debilitating pain. This is reflected by the fact that pain worsens or returns in worse form when you stop any of such relief measures. Also, most of these measures only bring relief and have nothing to so with the actual cause of the pain. They do not target or do anything about sciatica itself, and any delay in diagnosing the root cause of the pain may lead to sciatica condition actually worsening.

It is easy to see why a patient suffering from acute and agonizing pain of sciatica clings to such relief measures as it is like a drowning person clutching on to straws in an attempt to save himself. Most of these relief measures therefore turn out to be short term and actually make the condition worse or at least same as the patient was in before starting on them. Sciatica pain is so irritating that even the most commonplace tasks of day to day life become impossible to perform and sufferers accepts anything in the form of cure as long as they are able to get over with the agony of not being able to handle their daily chores.

So, if your doctor is unable to pinpoint the root cause of the pain you are feeling in your lower back pain after making you undergo all diagnostic tests, what you can do is to start on some exercises that are appropriate. Here it has to be understood that appropriate is a very important word as any wrong exercise can easily exacerbate the condition. Two methods of exercise namely yoga and pilates that are very popular and are not aimed specifically to treat sciatica pain have been shown to bring positive results for all types of sciatica patients. There are many who believe that not doing any form of exercises daily is one plausible cause of developing sciatica pain. These experts suggest doing exercises to keep muscles in a toned condition as toned muscles are vital in maintaining correct posture which is a precondition that does not let sciatica develop in the first place in instances where the ailment does not begin with any other underlying medical condition such as tumors in spinal cord.
